Book Review: His Dark Materials

I don’t know where to even begin with this trilogy — it’s brilliant. I loved every aspect of it. The fantasy, adventure, excitement, deceit, love, and more.

Philip Pullman has a beautiful way with words. Some may classify this series as “young adult,” but I feel that there is way more depth to it that younger generations may not pick up on. Many adults would appreciate this series.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the themes of religion and conformity that are present throughout, with many Catholic schools banning these books. Although, I personally feel that even if these themes are present, the overall message is not solely about religion (it would be silly to think that it is). I believe it’s more about corrupt authority in a general sense — these books shed light on what can happen if religious and political parties gain an overabundance of power.

These books also demonstrate the trials and tribulations of growing up, as well as the joy and excitement. They show the reader that there is always something new to learn, no matter what age a person is, and that there is “bravery in admitting you’re wrong.”

From The Golden Compass (or in the U.K. referred to as Northern Lights) to The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, we are led on Lyra’s journey to uncover the mystery and secrets of “dust.” We watch her character mature and grow from a confused little girl to a strong young adult. She is accompanied by her daemon, Pantalaimon (or “Pan” for short). Pan is one of the most amazing characters. I won’t give too much away, but Pan is essentially Lyra’s conscience. It’s important to note that each character in this world has their own daemon that takes the form of an animal.

From beginning to end, each book is as exciting as the next. These are definitely “page turners” and I highly recommend them. This series easily became one of my all time favorite trilogies. I found myself laughing, crying, and anxiously awaiting what would happen next. You’ll be swept away in these novels and wish they never had to end.

*If you love these books, you’ll want to check out the BBC/HBO series that was recently released. The TV adaptation is extremely well done.
