Will the Truth Prevail? A Review of Luck Don’t Come Easy by Tom Tytar
In his latest novel, Luck Don’t Come Easy, Tom Tytar delivers another fast-paced, suspenseful, and highly entertaining story!
From start to finish, the shifts between main characters Shawnee Tenkiller, Piper Donovan, and Colt McClain result in an exciting plot, one that kept me turning the pages. The structure of the book allows Tytar to expand on each of the main characters and their interconnected stories, and personally, I felt that this created an even more captivating mystery!
In the beginning, Shawnee’s involvement in a daring casino heist sets one part of the story in motion where money, greed, and corrupt morals take precedence, while Piper and Colt become increasingly determined to uncover truths that others would rather leave buried in their pursuit of doing what’s right. Ultimately, it becomes clear that each character faces their own internal battles, ranging from insecurity and fear of failure to longing for a fresh start and a desire for the truth to be heard.
One of the main characters in particular, private investigator Piper Donovan, struggles with several demons of her own, including a tumultuous battle with addiction. As her story unfolds, it becomes evident that she yearns to be heard and taken seriously while striving to find her own path to vindication. Even when I found myself increasingly frustrated with her throughout (given her instances of relapse), I couldn’t help rooting for her redemption along the way. I particularly enjoyed the unlikely relationship between Piper and Colt. Despite their entirely different life circumstances, they are able to find common ground in their determination to do what’s right and reveal the truth, even when the odds are stacked against them. Not to mention, the eventual confrontation between Captain Palmeri and Piper and Colt had me eagerly awaiting the moment when justice might finally be served!
When reflecting on the book and thinking about the world today, the question that often comes to my mind is, will the truth prevail?
To me, that question is at the heart of the story. Throughout the novel, characters are forced to decide whether to pursue the truth, speak it, believe it, or turn a blind eye when acknowledging it becomes inconvenient and greed takes over (e.g., Captain Palmeri!). Take both Piper and Colt, for example—they find themselves searching for answers surrounding the deaths of their fathers, and the truths they uncover force them to confront difficult realities about their pasts and the people they thought they knew. For Piper especially, those revelations challenge long-held beliefs about the people who shaped her life.
In the end, the characters, mysteries, and fast-paced plot come together to create a captivating book, which should come as no surprise given the exciting storylines in Tom Tytar’s previous novels! Perhaps Luck Don’t Come Easy will leave you wondering the same questions I did: Will the truth prevail, even when uncovering it is painful? And will good really triumph?
