Book Review: Malibu Rising

One of the most highly anticipated books of the summer, Malibu Rising will not disappoint its readers! Full of drama, excitement, love, and mystery, this novel is fast-paced and entertaining.

This book is about four siblings from Malibu, Nina, Jay, Kit, and Hud. They are the children of a famous rock star, Mick Riva. The story sheds light on the hardships that each sibling has endured, and the accomplishments that they have achieved, while solving the mystery of how Nina Riva’s famous annual summer party ends in flames.

The story is told over the course of 24 hours with flashbacks that provide insight into the family’s past. The rising tension and secrets that unfold, make for an unpredictable and captivating plot. Taylor Jenkins Reid has a unique writing style, one that makes for a very quick read.

On the surface, this novel may seem simple and trite, but it holds a much deeper meaning, surrounding the importance of finding oneself. Although it may feel that our lives are often shaped by those who raise us, the story exemplifies that we do not have to repeat the mistakes of the past. We are in control of shaping our future. It also shows the significance that the support of family, friends, and love have on a person’s life.

Overall, I recommend this book. The setting of Malibu is perfect for summer! Even though it encompasses some heavy topics (for example, alcoholism and abandonment), the overarching meaning is one that will stay with the reader.
