The Roughest Draft by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka

Book Review: The Roughest Draft

The Roughest Draft uncovers the complexities of relationships and the hard work that they entail. Main characters, Katrina Freeling and Nathan Van Huysen, must navigate their relationship as writing partners and once close friends, turned enemies. The duo must come together to write one final book together, and overcome the obstacles to not only create another best-selling novel, but to also mend their broken friendship. The authors created a well-written, enticing book, that will keep readers engaged from start to finish.

When I first picked up this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I had never read any of the authors’ previous work before. I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of writing and the character development throughout the story. The themes in the book explore relationships/friendship, mental health, and the importance of open communication. This novel also sheds light on the writing process, and how complicated it can be for two people to write a book together. I found it to be really intriguing and I loved the way the story bounced between the two main characters’ perspectives.

Overall, I really enjoyed this unique story and definitely recommend it. It’s a really quick read and also fun since it’s a book about books! Drop a line in the comments if you end up reading it, I’d love to hear your feedback. :)
