Book Review: Howl’s Moving Castle

Whimsical, imaginative, and enchanting! Howl’s Moving Castle is simply one of a kind! Diana Wynne Jones wrote a fantasy novel that will charm readers of all ages, and take them to a new world.

There are several themes present in this novel, including destiny, youth, courage, and love. In the beginning of the story, the main character, Sophie, feels as though her destiny is doomed simply because she is the eldest of three sisters. She then experiences a wicked curse, cast by the Witch of the Waste. Throughout the book, her character grows and transforms into one full of courage and strength. Before encountering Wizard Howl’s castle, she realizes that she has nothing to lose now that she is cursed, and she is more willing to take chances. The love and care that Sophie feels for those in her life is depicted throughout the story. She is a pure and genuine character, that you can’t help but adore!

Jones depicts Howl as self absorbed and fickle, although we later learn that this is far from the truth. Calcifer, the fire demon, provides much entertainment and forms a peculiar bond with Sophie, full of mutual respect.

Overall, this book is captivating and delightful! I have never read anything comparable, it is so unique and creative. I highly recommend this book, especially if you’re looking for a fun, light, quick, fantasy read!
