Book Review: Interview with the Vampire

Alright, this review is going to be pretty short. To be frank, I was not a fan of this book. Interview with the Vampire is the first novel in the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, and it was not what I expected at all.

Before reading this book, I thought the plot would be intriguing, I had heard such good things about it, and people raved about the series to me. I went in not knowing what to expect, but I had heard that it was the “best vampire series.” Then, once I actually started reading the book, I realized just how boring it is…it dragged on and on. The entire book is told as a flashback, as the main character, vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac, tells his story to a reporter.

Honestly, the amount of gruesome deaths that were described from Louis and his maker, Lestat, were just too much. Then, they turn a little girl (Claudia) into a vampire…and this is just bizarre. She eventually develops the mind of a grown woman, stuck in a little girl’s body. It’s apparent Louis loves her, but ultimately nothing goes right for Louis. He is a depressed and miserable vampire, full of remorse over what he’s become and who he has killed.

I almost didn’t finish this book, it was so difficult to get through. I debated whether to try the next book in the series to see if it gets any better, but decided why waste the time for now. I would not recommend this book — if you are really interested and must read it to see for yourself, then pick up a copy at your local library. Do not waste your money.
