Meant to Be by Emily Giffin
Book Review: Meant to Be
Emily Giffin’s latest novel is loosely inspired by John F. Kennedy, Jr., and Carolyn Bessette’s romance. This book takes place in the 90s and is certainly a page-turner! The characters are full of intrigue and charm, and the plot contains love, tragedy, and self-discovery.
The main characters include Joe Kingsley (III) and Cate Cooper. Joe is a young man from an affluent family, essentially considered celebrities, that has a history of prestige, along with tragedy (similar to JFK, Jr.‘s). In comparison, Cate Cooper grew up with little money, until her mother remarried a police officer, and they finally moved into middle-class society. Cate strives for a brighter future, one with stability and success. After living with her mother and abusive step-father, she is willing to do whatever she can to move out, and she eventually takes up modeling while in high school. Years later, Joe and Cate meet one afternoon during one of Cate’s modeling sessions, and they have an instant connection.
Cate and Joe face many trials and tribulations, but the power to overcome those obstacles is what makes their relationship so strong and secure. I loved this book, from the fashion, travel, and drama, to the true love between the main characters…it all made for such a captivating story! The themes of family, love, grief/loss, wealth/power, and connection are present throughout the novel, adding to the story’s depth.
Overall, I really love Emily Giffin’s novels, and of the books that she’s written, Meant to Be easily became one of my favorites. If you’re a fan of her writing, or looking to try one of her books out, I’d definitely recommend reading Meant to Be! :)
