The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Book Review: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
This novel is truly unforgettable and unique. V.E. Schwab created complex characters, in an original story, that will stay with you long after finishing the book. The reader learns of the trials and tribulations of immortality, as the main character, Addie LaRue, makes a dark and dangerous deal with a mysterious god.
The author tells the main character’s story in a nonlinear narrative, by depicting her life in the “present” moment, and flashing back to when she first made her deal for immortality (the years leading up to the “present”). The one caveat in the deal that Addie made is that everyone who meets her will forget her. She lives her life never being remembered, not even by her own family. It’s incredibly sad, but also intriguing to experience her life through the pages.
At first, I felt that this book was quite slow. In my opinion, the plot did not pick up until about halfway through the story. This being said, if you plan to read it, stick with it! The overall message and plot is worth it. The fantasy elements of the story make it magical and whimsical, while at the same time, the complexities of the characters make the story incredibly deep and poignant.
The overall message of this story is to make the most of the time one is given. Despite the pain and hardships one may go through, the moments of triumph and happiness is worth it in the end. There are so many things to experience in the world and so many places to explore, we have to remember to be grateful for each and every moment.
In short, I recommend picking up this book! Stick with it, it’s definitely worth the read.
