Book Review: The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

An imaginative story surrounding love, acceptance, and trust, The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune is a charming novel. This story shows the reader that it’s okay to be yourself and that we should embrace each other’s unique qualities, even when we are met with judgment or adversity.

When case worker, Linus Baker, is sent by the Department of Magical Youth to investigate an orphanage on a remote island, he discovers more than he could have ever imagined. The head of the orphanage, Arthur Parnassus, is in charge of six incredibly special children, who each have their own unique gifts. This story is full of hope and demonstrates that family and friends can be found when we least expect it.

I feel that this book is really relevant in today’s society, especially when it comes to accepting each other’s differences without judgment. It is easy for people to make assumptions about one another, and to not take the time to really get to know each other. Additionally, it’s easy to become complacent in one’s daily routine and to be resistant to change. This novel shows what is truly possible when we embrace change and to see the good that the world has to offer.

In short, I enjoyed this book; however, I did expect a little more from the fantasy aspect. Although, I thought that it portrayed very important messages, relevant to everyone, especially in the world today. If you get the chance, I recommend picking up this book!
